The preamble of the Declaration of Independence asserts the right and duty of people to “alter or abolish” their government when it violates their rights. That was a revolutionary idea in 1776, one which the founding fathers understood was essential to protect if liberty was to be preserved. It is commonly referred to as the “right of revolution”.
The US Constitution is itself an example of the exercise of that right. The first and second Constitution were written by people, who prized this right above all others. They recognized that the British Empire no longer protected their rights, and so, established a new government that would. Understanding the nature of governments as they did, the founders preserved this right even for it’s citizens, for you and I.
Americans are facing the loss of their civil liberties, the annihilation of their climate, the theft of their public wealth, and the eminent destruction of their commons. It is time to recognize the seriousness of our present circumstances. If our political system is no longer capable of protecting these rights, is it time to assert our “right to revolution”? We think so.
When approached in thoughtful ways, this revolution will be a deeply profound and spiritual one, moving us into a new age of sustainability and life centered values, if we all so choose. Do things have to get much worse before Americans act, or can we as one people, transform their government before it’s too late?
This week we will be asking some tough questions. Join the call as we discuss the strategy behind the People’s Congress, and the pros and cons of holding a General Assembly this summer.
