I would add a Constitutional Amendment that would limit the President, Senators, and Members of Congress to one 6-year term, with 1/3 of Senators and Congress rotating out every 2 years. Include a process for recall by the people within the 6-year term. Senators and Congressmen could not run for re-election to a different Congressional office (e.g., senators for the House and visa versa) until 6 years after their current term has ended. This would enable them to focus on governing and to make decisions based on what they believe is in the best interest of the country rather than spending their time raising money for re-election and basing their decisions on what those that have contributed to their campaigns want. They would be accountable to the people, period.

    • Jeaherendeen

Yes, but, until the election system is reformed, this will never pass Congress.  It certainly won’t pass our present Congress.

      • Capacity

I agree — unless we force them — and I have been encouraged by all the groups/people coming together to push this agenda.

At the national level, MoveToAmend, Public Citizen, Common Cause, Free Speech for People, People for the American Way, United Repubilc and Dylan Ratigan are all working together.

In response to that, in my community, we’ve organized MoveOn, Occupy, the Unions, DFA, and MoveToAmend’s local affiliate.  We’ll be part of a national event Jan 20 to Occupy the Courts – & have invited a R and a D mayor for 2 major cities in the county to speak, are asking them to help us get a resolution urging Congress to pass this amendment, and to put it on the next ballot so people can express their opinion.

We’re also asking them to help us make a presentation at a meeting of all the mayors in the county to urge all of them to do the same and to promote this in their state & nat’l Conference of Mayors meetings.  Some communities have already done this — Los Angeles, Boulder, CO, Missoula, MT for example.

We’re also planning to organize all the folks in these local orgs to cover all meetings when members of Congress are back in their district for Town Halls, etc. so someone is there to specifically ask them if they will support this consittutional amendment and to keep doing that until Congress passes it.

Once we’re organized to do that, we can put pressure on the state legislatures to ratify. We’re not going to get a different Congress until we get money out of politics — and the Supreme Court out of our elections.

  • Jeaherendeen

HELLO!  HCPBs have to be the FIRST reform.  Otherwise, none of the others will ever happen.  Is there any evidence to support the belief that a majority of Progressives will get into Congress when votes can be massively hacked by one geek in a back room somewhere?    Which, of  course, brings up the problem of how we’re going to get HCPBs in the first place.

    • Capacity

      What are HCPBs?

      • Jeaherendeen

Hand-Counted Paper Ballots.  (As oppposed to “receipts” or “print-outs,” which may easily be something very different & completely unrelated to whatever the secret software is programming the machine to do.)

        • Capacity

Thank you.  I totally agree this is a very high priority.

Tavis Smiley

An outspoken Television personality Author and voice for change. Tavis Smiley and Dr. Cornel West conducted a nine-state, 18-city tour to highlight the plight of poor people of all races, colors, and creeds so they will not be forgotten, ignored, or rendered invisible during this difficult and dangerous time of economic deprivation and political cowardice.

Alan Grayson

One of the most qualified people in the U.S. is running for office and he needs your support. Grayson is a hard hitting Harvard graduate who worked his way through school. In addition to credentials in law, Grayson has an advanced degree in gerontology, a resource that would bring insight on the feasibility and sustainability of all issues surrounding retirement and health care for senior citizens.

Elizabeth Warren

Elizabeth Warren’s dedication and impeccable methods in research were used extensively to create the (CFPB) Consumer Financial Protections Bureau. In fact, Ms. Warren’s work is so discouraging to corporate interests that she moved aside so that Richard Cordray could head the agency. The end result is that now Ms. Warren is running to become part of congress. The people could not ask for a better leader for liberty.
