The phrase “We the People” is a very empowering one, if we would only stop to consider the profound significance behind those simple words. This Sunday on INTEROCCUPY we will be talking with Mike Gravel, founder and force behind the National Citizens Initiative for Democracy. The National Citizens Initiative for Democracy (NCID) is a fundamental legislative proposal that will allow citizens, independent of Representative Government (Congress, Executive and the Judiciary), to propose and vote on laws. NCID consists of a Constitutional amendment and a federal statute. Pretty simple.

Headlining a series of amendments in a national referendum, the Citizens Assembly Amendment would usher in a truly democratic era, providing Americans with the power to make healthcare a constitutionally guaranteed right, to recall elected officials, or deliberate themselves on fundamentally important issues such as a national energy or water policy. You want democracy? Come and get it!
We all talk a lot about our problems. What if the solution was to simply create a set of very well managed and focused amendments to be voted on in a concise series of national referendums freed of corporate influence? Or perhaps you don’t believe Americans should have that right. Would gender equality become the law of the land in the near future if we did? Writing an amendment to ensure it does may be worth all our consideration, and the only way to find out.
