A National Referendum for Scottish Independence

Last week we looked at the Syrisa Party, and how a coalition of the radical left is organizing for a potential upset in electoral politics in Greece. This week we’re moving on to Scotland, where the newly elected Scottish National Party will fulfill it’s promise to hold a national referendum on the issue of independence from the United Kingdom in the autumn of 2014.

As we have discussed, a National Referendum is currently not provided for in America, and because the two party duopoly likes to maintain a hold on power, a National Referendum will not be possible until a majority of Americans insist on having the same rights enjoyed by citizens in more democratic societies around the world, including our several States!

Perhaps it’s time to have a National Referendum in America pertaining to an Amendment to our Constitution which firmly and finally establishes that money is not speech, that our political institutions and representatives are no longer for sale or for hire. If the Move To Amend initiative were to be voted on tomorrow by eligible voters in America, we think it would pass overwhelmingly!

We need political Parties in America which have the same determination and trust in the voters the Scottish National Party has demonstrated. In addition, the SNP has proposed to reduce the voting age for the referendum from 18 to 16! Now that’s putting the future of the country into the hands of those who will inherit it. America could be a much more democratic country, were it not for the corrosive influences of concentrated wealth and power. It will require a strong, coherent and focused popular movement to change the outlook for our country. Until Americans begin to realize this, global climate change, inequality, resource extraction and environmental degradation will likely continue unabated.

America’s constitution was an empowering document, especially for white male property owners in 1776. However, the oldest living constitution now in effect in the world, it was by no means perfect. As demonstrated time and time again, there are many ways in which our system of governance can be improved upon. It’s time, we think, to upgrade our national operating system.

Please join the conversation this Sunday and bring a few friends with you! Review the links we have provided and add your voice and thoughts to this invaluable discussion.

Next Sunday, June 10th, we will be talking with Hordur Torfason, leader of Iceland’s Kitchenware Revolution, which led to the resignation of parliament, comprehensive banking reforms and a new constitution! We invite everyone to listen in as we discuss the global revolution against the neoliberal policies of austerity and financial terrorism currently wreaking havoc on the 99%!

In the meantime, please read our petition and pass it on!

In solidarity,
