Why Now?
Because the current strategy is not working!
Americans are facing so many issues this year it is difficult to know where to begin, and Congress is not listening. Banking institutions have failed the public good, Wall Street continues to hand out record bonuses, gas companies are fracking the rural landscape and leaving behind a legacy of neglect and abuse that will take decades to repair. Environmentalists have been marched to jail for trying to save our national treasures while military personnel are sentenced to years in prison for exposing war crimes committed in our name. The list is endless and growing longer with each passing month. Teachers are under assault, nurses, firemen and police lose pensions and savings while the richest Americans and corporations pay fewer or no taxes. Real unemployment continues to hover around 19%, and an investment by the private sector into real jobs and infrastructure is obviously lacking, despite the bail out! A single payer health care system was essentially rejected out of hand despite the large majority of support it enjoyed with most citizens. Something is wrong in America, and people everywhere are beginning to understand it is time to right these ongoing injustices.
Many groups have emerged in response to those emergencies, but as multinational corporations prepare to unleash their virtually unlimited capital in the upcoming election cycle, Americans are slowly but surely losing their voice. Corporations are buying their way through Congress, and with the virtual alliance between big business and the media, there may be no way to stop this juggernaut until we all join hands, acknowledge our common concerns, and make one giant fist standing up to the corporate takeover of our government. No less than the democratic principals we cherish are at stake.
It is time for us to reflect on the root causes of our common concerns. This is the focus and intention of the People’s Congress. Here and now, organizations, individuals, children, grandmothers, teachers, nurses, environmentalists, soldiers, the working poor, and the jobless are coming together to express their desire for a return to a truly representational form of government. We the People are coming together here, now, to express our desire for a more just society. And it is not only those goals which we seek to fulfill, but more specifically, a reform of the laws and abuses which foster the criminal takeover of our banking system, the endless barrage of propaganda by the media, the notion that war is an endless condition which needs to be fed by tax dollars which could otherwise be used for building community and truly protecting our future. We seek a restoration of our electoral system, and finally demand transparency return to Government.
Would you give up one week of your life to make these changes? The answer is a resounding yes! People from every corner of the nation are realizing that until they stand for their health, stand for their property, stand for their children’s education, until they stand up for our democracy, the nation will be taken from them as surely as their pensions. By joining together, we ensure that this will never happen.
“Presently, about 1,500 large corporations control or block the votes of most members of Congress on very important matters. It is not beyond the realm of realization to look forward to a time when a few million modestly organized Americans, representing the values of much greater numbers of their fellow Americans, turn the national legislature into a Congress of the people, by the people, and for the people.” —Ralph Nader
